If we could design a show we would bring in some elements from each media analyzed.
From Dora the Explorer we would take the element of interaction. We would incorporate interaction because of its benefits in encouraging the child to participate in problem solving and theory of mind situations. Participating in more theory of mind situations may encourage an earlier understanding of theory of mind. It is important to have an element of physics in the show since children are able to learn a basic understanding of how the physical world works based on experience.
From Sesame Street we would included language and goal intention. We would use games and subject matter that promotes language development. One of these aspects would be phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is associated with better reading skills at an earlier age. A great example of this was with the "Amazing Alphabet Race". Sesame Street took a language skill and made it into a fun and interactive game. Child would be practicing there letter separation (which leads to phonemic awareness) without even being aware of it! We would like to include goals and intentions situations in the show since kids have an early understanding of intentions and this would continue to develop them.
Finally, from Dr. Suess we would take language. Specifically, we would include rhyming because it promotes phonemic awareness.
Overall we believe a children's shows should be evolving. It should not be boring and repetitive. We found this problem with Dora the Explorer. We found it to be fairly repetitive. We enjoyed that Sesame Street because it adapted it's subject matter to the changing demographic. We would like our show to be both educational and entertaining. We found the best forms of children's media were when the shows were so well designed children did not even know they were learning.
